How the Dental Career Has Developed Through the Ages

A dentist can go to dental school today whereas just three-hundred years ago there was really no such thing as dental school. It used to be that a dentist would be a traveling tooth-puller. There really wasn't a career as a dentist, but people still had dental problems. So, who provided the dental services if there wasn't a dentist? Most of the time dentist services would only be someone who could pull a tooth. For example, a barber would cut hair, but also provided services such as pulling teeth. And a jeweler would create a dental bridge out of gold or another metal to fill in the gap of pulled and missing teeth. Three-hundred years ago there wasn't the dentist who would clean teeth and x-ray the dental bone to check for any dental problems that would need the dentist to perform preventative care.

Three-hundred years ago, America was actually (believe it or not) known as the people with the worst dental health around! Part of that horrible dental health was lack of dentist services available as well as a bad diet. Interesting how what you eat actually creates dental problems or improves your dental health! Good dental care isn't just all about good oral care habits, it's about over-all health which starts with what you put into your mouth every day.

A dentist today can pull teeth just like the make-shift dentist three hundred years ago, but today a dentist will do everything else possible to not have to pull a tooth. Teeth are important to the look of health and youth in a face. Because facial muscles are supported by teeth, when teeth are gone then there is a sunken in look around the oral place where teeth are missing. A dentist today would be able to catch a dental problem before it got to the point of pulling a tooth.

The majority work of a dentist working in a general dentistry is to improve the oral health and dental care habits of dental patients as well as provide preventative care for those dental patients. Preventative dental care improves the oral health as well as the over-all health of a dental patient. The dentist and dentistry team which includes dental hygienists and dental assistants provide mostly preventative dental care which includes cleaning teeth and gums and applying fluoride which strengthens teeth.

Other preventative care that a dentist or dental hygienist will do is to measure the oral tissues around the teeth to check for any receding gum lines, x-ray dental bone and the oral cavity to check for any decay in the teeth or any dental problems that start inside teeth and bone along with dental placement of teeth. A dentist can tell with an x-ray when wisdom teeth buds have come in and are ready for removal. Wisdom teeth removal is part of dentist services of preventative care. Since there are so many problems that wisdom teeth cause as time progresses, today a dentist will usually just extract wisdom teeth before they have a chance to cause oral havoc and problems. This is one of the main differences between a dentist today and the dentist of yesterday--preventative dental care and services prevent dental problems from happening today whereas the dentist of yesterday waited for dental problems to persist and create pain and health issues before anything could be done by the dentist.
